Psalm 119:11-12  What Do I Treasure?

10/17/2013

Scripture:
Your word I have treasured in my heart,
That I may not sin against You.
Blessed are You, O Lord;
Teach me Your statutes.   -Psalm 119:11-12, NASB 1995

Observation:
-God's word works within us to keep us from sinning.
-The psalmist desires to be taught by the Lord as he studies GOd's word.

Application:
I am just curious...how many of you memorize Scripture?  I have not made any concerted effort for many years.  I make all kinds of excuses, and with how readily available a Bible is around me the excuses don't seem so far out of line...still.

I wonder if that is what the psalmist is actually saying here?  Your word I have treasured in my heart.  I can commit things to memory, but that does not mean that I tThe good man out of the good [a]treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from [b]that which fills his heart.reasure them in my heart.  I treasure my husband in my heart,  our marriage.  He can still make my heart dance after all of these years in a way that no one else can.  Perhaps that is more what the psalmist is driving at here-he treasures God's word in his heart, it makes his heart dance.  Thinking on those words makes his day brighter, even in the bad times.  Thinking on those words helps to guide and direct his path-they keep him from sinning.  Here is another interesting verse for us to consider.  The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart. - Luke 6:45, NASB  "Out of the abundance of the heart..."   That is what we need to catch here.  The importance of treasuring God's word in our hearts.

The other important note to make is that the psalmist knows he needs to rely on the Lord to teach him.   We cannot have a better teacher than the Lord, and He is available to everyone of us.  He is ready to teach whenever we are ready to learn.  I just need to make myself available to Him, to present myself a willing pupil, to become a student of God's word.  I have to ask myself this morning; what is it that keeps from "sitting at His feet?"  If I truly treasure God's word what will I do to make sure that I grab all I can.  What do I need to give up that gets in my way?

I got up this morning with another Pam Mark Hall song running through my head.
It is my prayer today.

Grace, Peace, and Mercy,
Deb
