Luke 22:1-46
And he (Jesus) said to them, “I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer.  For I tell you I will not eat it until it is fulfilled in the kingdom of God.”  And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he said, “Take this, and divide it among yourselves.  For I tell you that from now on I will not drink of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes.” And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying,“This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”  And likewise the cup after they had eaten, saying, “This cup that is poured out for you is the new covenant in my blood.-Luke 22:15-20, ESV

We attend a church that shares the Lord's table every Sunday.  I really like that; as each Sunday I sit and consider what the Lord has done for me-for us.  HIs body was broken; His blood was poured out, and it was all because "God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.  For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.  Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe is condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God." -John 3:16-18, ESV

King David Despised the Lord?!

Luke 15
Nathan said to David, “You are the man! Thus says the Lord, the God of Israel, ‘I anointed you king over Israel, and I delivered you out of the hand of Saul.  And I gave you your master's house and your master's wives into your arms and gave you the house of Israel and of Judah. And if this were too little, I would add to you as much more.  Why have you despised the word of the Lord, to do what is evil in his sight? -2 Samuel 12:7-9a, ESV

Even King David,  of whom God Himself testifies that he was "a man after God's own heart,"  was not immune to sin.  (Acts 13:22; 1 Samuel 13:14)  In today's reading we come in on the conversation that the prophet Nathan had with David.  My thought as I read this passage was that I do not think that God's view of David's sin is unique to this particular case.  When I sin I too despise the word of the Lord and do evil in His sight.  That just sounds so ugly.

Nathan the prophet goes on to say:
"Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised me (God) and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife." (2 Samuel 12:10, ESV)

and:
"by this deed you have utterly scorned the Lord" (2 Samuel 12:14, ESV)

Sin is not some benign thing that we sometimes fall into it is an affront to God.  It shows a lack of respect for God.  It is an insult to Him.

I cannot help thinking about Ephesians right now.  Notice that when the Lord speaks to David about his sin, he starts by remindinghim of all the He has given to David.  Ephesians is that for me.  Within this letter from Paul is laid out for us the great and abundant blessings we have in Christ; and then I go and sin some more.  I can tell you I prayed fervantly this morning that throughout my day I would not live as one who despises God nor His word.

Grace, Peace, and Mercy,

Deb
