Perfect Scissors-A Giveaway!

9/18/2014

Last week I shared how much I love my newest scissors from Karen Kay Buckley.  I ordered the small and large size last spring.  Confession:  I am being tempted to add the medium size to my collection.

Karen Kay Buckley 7-1/2" Perfect Scissors
The small ones traveled with me this summer on our journey around the western states.  I kept these in my little travel bag, another one of Karen's items that I love, which keeps all of my applique supplies neat, organized, and protected.  The scissors come with a little protective cover that actually "snaps" into place so I never had an issue with it falling off.  Let me tell you, you need that cover as the tips of these little scissors are very, very sharp.  I mainly used them for snipping threads and making little cuts as I appliqued my pieces in place.  The pair they replaced were about the same size, but the handles did not give me much room to slip my fingers in.  These are generously sized for comfort as you cut.

My very cool Perfect Thread Bag
The larger scissors are the ones I bragged about the other day when I shared the Wildflower Quilt I am working on.  I mentioned that the handles were quite comfortable in part because they are softer than anything else I have.  Notice in the photos below how they "squish."

I hope you can see in the following photos why I like the blade covers so much.  If you look closely there is a little ridge that enables the cover to snap into place.

Now for the fun part.  Through the generosity of Karen Kay Buckley one lucky reader of this blog will win a pair of her Perfect Scissors for their very own.  All you have to do is leave me a comment in which you answer two questions:

1-Piecing, Applique, or Both
2-How many UFO's are floating around your quilt space.
Bonus: Invite your friends and ask them to leave your name in their comments. This will earn you an extra entry.

I would also love to visit your blog if you have one so be sure and share a link when you comment.  (This does not earn you any extra entries.)

Due to shipping restrictions I have to limit this sweepstake to residents of the United States.

The winning name will be drawn from all available entries and announced on Thursday September 25th.  The winner will be contacted by email.

(Again, I am in now way associated with Karen Kay Buckley, I have simply fallen in love with her products and want to share with you the things that make my quilting life better.)

Taking life a stitch at a time,
Debra

I do piecing, but have applique ufo's laying around. And I probably have at least 3 ufo's unstarted!

Deb link
9/18/2014 01:40:45 pm

I don't know Jan, I think they have not been started then they are not UfO's...yet.

Ilana
9/18/2014 09:07:29 am

I do mostly piecing but I do like applique as well. I have dozens of UFOs. I joined a UFO club this year and am happy to say that I am making headway with my goal of turning my UFOs into finished projects.

Deb link
9/18/2014 01:41:53 pm

Good for you, llana!

Susan
9/18/2014 09:20:28 am

I love both piecing and applique. Not very many UFOs laying around as I also love the quilting process!

Deb link
9/18/2014 01:43:10 pm

You rock, Susan!!!

Tawnya Cleaver
9/18/2014 09:45:26 am

Mostly piecing for me. I've only made two projects with applique. I have 6 quilting UFO's. Im ashamed to say.

Deb link
9/18/2014 01:47:44 pm

Oh, Tawnya-I wish I only had six. I am determined to finish up the ones that I still love. For those that I am no longer interested in I think I might try to see if another quilter might like them. My problem tends to be I fall in love with something new and do not wait to finish one quilt before launching another.

Sandie French
9/18/2014 11:47:14 am

Applique and piecing! And UFOs abound in my studio as there is always some new technique to try, a class to take, someone's birthday to make a little ditty for...thus more UFOs...and more projects to start!

Deb link
9/18/2014 01:49:15 pm

Oh, Sandie-you are indeed a kindred spirit!

Leslie Guyton
9/18/2014 01:50:40 pm

I love both...depends on what mood I'm in to what I work on. And...UFOs....I'm embarrassed to say, probably 15-20! Yikes! It looks worse when I actually see a number in type!

Deb link
9/19/2014 11:54:01 am

I have to agree-I love both as well. I counted mine a couple of years ago- I think it was at 12 or so then, I have added a few more since, but happy to say have finished several new ones as well, so all is not lost!

Tawnya
9/18/2014 09:38:38 pm

That is exactly what happens to me!!!!

Kay Knepp
9/19/2014 05:31:56 am

The scissors look wonderful!! I do both...Applique....Piece.. and UFO's???? No clue! Probably 20 or more!!

Deb link
9/19/2014 11:59:16 am

Clearly we enjoy what we are doing, Kay!

Wendy
9/19/2014 09:38:13 am

I enjoy both piecing and appliqué. I currently have one Baltimore album style UFO and 3 pieced UFOs. Shamefully I haven't touched them in quite a while. Enjoyed your review of these scissors as I've been wondering how they were. On my "want it" list now :)

Deb link
9/19/2014 12:01:34 pm

I am glad you found my review helpful, Wendy. Ooh, a Baltimore album- it is on my to do list.

Kathy link
9/20/2014 11:49:10 am

Piecing (haven't learned how to appliqué yet). I have plenty of WIPs but onlyone true UFO. Thanks to you and KKB for the giveaway!

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:29:28 am

Thanks for stopping by Kathy. Works in progress-sounds so much more productive!

Kathy
9/20/2014 11:49:15 am

both, I have too many ufos to count, one is over 20 years old!

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:33:34 am

Kathy, Pat Sloan did a UFO busting two years ago that led me to let go of some of the old ones I knew I would never finish-boy was that harder than I thought it would be!

Erin Dressler
9/20/2014 12:13:34 pm

Mainly piecing but I am doing a holiday wall hanging right now where I am appliquing. The design is called sunburst and I wound up cutting over 300 pieces but it's gonna be pretty:) along with my holiday quilt I have three other ufos. Happy quilting!

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:38:21 am

Over 300 pieces! Wow! I would love to see a photo if you care to share on my facebook page (Tuning My Heart.) Happy quilting to you too!

Sharon Gates
9/20/2014 12:14:03 pm

I love applique..
As for UFO's - OMG! Too many to think about, but more that 6

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:43:27 am

I always admired applique quilts but it took several years for me to take the plunge. I find I am really drawn to patterns that combine piecing and applique. I am determined to master needle turn!

Jane Shaw
9/20/2014 12:33:42 pm

I do hand piecing( especially EPP) and appliqué. I currently am working on five different quilts.

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:48:53 am

I admire you, Jane. I have quilted a few antique quilts that had been hand-pieced and always admire the work of these ladies as I sit at my frame trying to do justice to their work. There is a part of me that is quite glad to know people still prefer this method. One of these days I intend to give EPP a try... I do not know why it scares me.

Kathy Nester
9/20/2014 12:43:35 pm

I do piecing and applique both, have 4 UFO to be completed,...many more to start....

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:50:15 am

I like your attiitude Kathy-I too have many more to start! Happy Quilting!!

Kim Cisar link
9/20/2014 12:45:16 pm

I love to piece but I also applique as well. As for my UFO's I do have several all in different phases of completion. Most are quilt tops just waiting to be quilted.

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:53:40 am

That pile does tend to grow for me: the tops waiting to be quilted. I marvel at people who are able to hand-quilt several a year.

Terry Person
9/20/2014 12:51:41 pm

Piecing.
Dozens (and more started all the time). Two big finishes so far this year, and good progress on another 1.

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:55:39 am

Yay for finished quilts! And yay for the joy of starting something new! Thanks for stopping by and happy quilting!

Shirley Strache
9/20/2014 12:56:05 pm

Oh I do both, but am relatively new to applique. Still learning all the different techniques. I have one quilt I am binding, three that need to be sandwiched and quilted and six in progress. Not too too bad.

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:58:06 am

Way to go, Shirley! I only started applique about three years ago, still much to learn. But then that is part of the fun.

Gladys Gardiner
9/20/2014 01:04:43 pm

IBoth. I have so many UFOs I can't count them all.

Deb link
9/21/2014 08:59:37 am

Haha, good for you, Gladys. Happy Quilting!!

Denise Barber
9/20/2014 01:05:18 pm

New quilter. Need good fabric scissors to get me started.
Thank you

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:03:51 am

Welcome to you, Denise! I hope you will stop by and ask questions and be encouraged as you embark on your quilting journey. I would love to encourage you and assist any way that I can.

Sylvia Wheeler
9/20/2014 01:16:48 pm

Piecing and appliqué. I have probably 10 ufos.

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:05:05 am

I am glad you stopped by, Sylvia. Happy Quilting to you!

Sharron Evans link
9/20/2014 01:31:32 pm

I love both piecing and applique but I do mostly piecing. Applique is so relaxing BUT I don't like the preparation to start appliqueing. The 11 UFO's are things I'm trying to get back to. I have one quilt that I'm hand quilting and I don't ever want to finish it. It was a round row robin with my bee members. It's called "Circle of Friends" and is quilted with different sizes of circles overlapping. Once I realized I never wanted to finish it, I put the binding on. Still needs more quilting, though!

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:10:10 am

I do agree with you, Sharron; the preparation is not much fun. What method(s) of applique do you use?

Lorena Schwab
9/20/2014 01:34:54 pm

I both piece and applique and if I did not have about thirty unfinished pieces I could just applique and be very happy.

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:12:08 am

Haha Lorena-I am with you on that one! Maybe reward yourself with applique everytime you finish one of those UFO's.

Nancy Scott
9/20/2014 01:35:05 pm

Both. At least 5 UFOS

THANKS!

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:13:35 am

Glad you stopped by, Nancy!

Lori
9/20/2014 01:43:02 pm

Both. I love them together. I have 7 ufos floating around my studio.

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:15:50 am

I do too, Lori-piecing and applique in combination is my favorite.

Lisa Acevedo
9/20/2014 02:19:42 pm

I applique but looking to learn paper piecing. Those hexies are too adorable to refuse. I don't even want to count my ufo's. Considering I am a craft addict and besides fabric; I also hoard paper; yarn and beads. So as long as I don't count in my mind I don't have many. Lol

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:18:25 am

Those hexies! Another thing I am going to have to learn how to do. So many beautiful hexie quilts have been shared on Celebrate Hand Quilting's facebook page-I am in awe.

Shelly McIntosh link
9/20/2014 02:24:21 pm

Both piecing and applique. Believe it or not I have zero UFOs. I start a quilt and finish it before starting another almost always. Once I had a quilt top finished and was waiting for backing fabric to arrive so I began cutting fabric for the next one. That's as close as I got to multiples going at the same time.

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:22:36 am

You are a rare one, Shelly! Thanks for stopping by- I long to be like you.

Debby Brehm
9/20/2014 02:55:55 pm

Love all types of quilting. Have nine UFOs in my work space. I cannot tell you how many are in storage. Get the medium scissors for yourself. They are the only ones I have and they are great.

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:25:29 am

Thanks for you input, Debby. I hope KKB never stops making these scissors!

Melinda Harris
9/20/2014 03:59:14 pm

I prefer hand piecing, & I have at least 12 UFOs!

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:27:38 am

I am just delighted to meet quilter's who hand-piece, Melinda. Happy Quilting!!

grace thorne link
9/20/2014 05:50:31 pm

piece AND applique, can't decide which i like better....and UFOs? oh, about 30 i would guess....until i start something new, that is...and i would love a pair of these...

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:30:01 am

haha, Grace-isn't that the way it goes. Sometimes I feel like I have quilting ADHD-ooh, look, a new pattern!

Cindy May
9/20/2014 05:55:42 pm

Piecing, and 10 tops and backs right now waiting to be sandwiched and quilted. Three more still in pieces. Love the scissors!

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:33:51 am

Go, Cindy! I hope you will consider sharing photos of your quilts on my facebook page (Tuning My Heart) so I can see those tops.

Nina Kelley
9/20/2014 06:10:58 pm

I have primarily pieced by machine. I have never been particularly adept at hand applique so over the past four months have been on a mission to learn various hand applique techniques. I am seeing some improvement in my hand applique and finally feel that I really can do an appliqued quilt. I try not to count my UFOs, but probably have about 15. I prefer to call them WIPs, which reduces my guilt levels.

Deb link
9/21/2014 09:39:05 am

Nina, yes, I am thinking about relabeling some of my UFO's as WIP's-you are right- it sounds better! I have gotten pretty comfortable with fusible applique so I have done more of that. I am working on learning needle turn, but am certainly in need of more practice. Would love to be able to encourage one another in our hand-applique endeavors. Thanks for stopping by and happy quilting!

Robin
9/21/2014 01:24:48 pm

I love all three, but I am loving applique more and more these days. I can't even give you a number of ufo's. I have finished my quilts but there are things I started and didn't like and therefore didn't finish. I am thinking of purging these???

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:09:54 am

Applique is becoming my new love too. That is great that your unfinished quilts are the ones that did not light your fire. I think purging is the right thing to do. Happy Quilting!!!

Kathy Timmons
9/21/2014 01:29:40 pm

I LOVE piecing...but will applique too! I have 8 quilt tops ready for quilting and probably at least a dozen UFO's. I make blocks to see if I like a pattern and if I don't really want to make a whole quilt then I will save and eventually make a sampler. I am always using small scraps to make 4 patches and 9 patches that I can use when needed...Do those count as UFO's? I just love quilting and playing with fabric! :-) I usually piece by hand and applique by hand too. Thanks for the giveaway!

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:13:09 am

Ooh, another handwork person! Well, Kathy, my thoughts are they are not UFO's if if they are not part of a quilt yet.

I like your idea of making a sample block. I envision some even being made into a small finished product that would make a nice gift.

Thanks for stopping by and sharing!

Elaine Chamberlain
9/21/2014 01:33:22 pm

I like piecing and applique, but sadly have too little time to do much of either. At present, I have at least 6 UFOs and several patterns I am wanting to start. LOL. I do love a challenge.

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:16:59 am

I hear you, Elaine. My job gets in the way. My boys are grown so at least I have a lot more free time when I am not at work. You sound like a kindred spirit when it comes to having patterns that you want to start. Should I challenge you to pick one UFO and get it finished?

Lisa Price
9/21/2014 01:36:46 pm

I do both piecing & applique, but I absolutely love applique. I hand applique & hand quilt. I have 6 current UFOs. I saw these scissors at a local quilt show last month and they are at the top of my wishlist!!

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:18:38 am

I am so glad you stopped by, Lisa. Always nice to meet another quilter who likes handwork. Wish I could give everyone a pair of the scissors!

Cindy Shima
9/21/2014 01:54:16 pm

1. I do both piecing and appliqué but love the look of appliqué and want to get better at that
2. 1 UFO because I had 3 other projects for other people. This one is for me :)

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:20:23 am

I am with you on wanting to get better at applique, Cindy!

Isn't that the way we quilters are-quilting for others before ourselves.

Ginny Perryman
9/21/2014 03:27:41 pm

i love both piecing and appliqué. I am trying to catch up with my quilting now. I am down to 6 UFO's. Two of which are piecing and appliqué.

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:22:16 am

Oh, Ginny, I wish I could see your quilts. Piecing and applique in combo has become my favorite.

Lisa McCall
9/21/2014 05:31:36 pm

I like piecing best, not very good at applique. I have about 7-6 ufo's all the time.

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:24:17 am

I like that, Lisa-"7-6 UFO's all the time." In some sense I like having some around because they are all so different that I can work on something that I am in the mood for.

Madelon Rood link
9/21/2014 06:15:12 pm

Since I live in the Netherlands, I'm sorry the scissors are not for me. I like both piecing (by hand!) and applique. At least five UFO's are waiting for me: I have more ideas than time... I don't have a blog, but you can find my quilts between a lot of others at my pinterest pages.

Deb link
9/22/2014 08:27:55 am

I am so glad you stopped by and commented, Madelon. I hope that someday I will be able to include overseas shipping-there are some places that are outrageously expensive to ship to though.
Time! Wouldn't we all like to have more of that!!!
I will look for you on Pinterest.

Deb
9/22/2014 11:08:04 am

Madelon, I have not been able to find your Pinterest page )-:

Darcy Thorn
9/21/2014 10:07:38 pm

I do both piecing and applique I love to applique with silk thread. It melts like butter into fabric. I have at least a dozen Ufo's. Currently a Frankenstein quilt is calling me to finish it for Halloween! You have a lovely blot and I like that you share your fav stuff!

Deb link
9/22/2014 11:14:42 am

Nice to "meet" you, Darcy. I had the opportunity to try silk thread this year-You are right about how it melts into the fabric.

A Frankenstein quilt! Sounds spooktacular! Thank you for your words of encouragement. I am glad you stopped by.

Donna
9/21/2014 11:29:35 pm

I do both. Recently I have rediscovered my love of applique, however, sometimes my arthritic hands won't cooperate. I think these scissors would help me a lot.

Donna
9/21/2014 11:31:24 pm

OOPS. I forgot to say that I have about 10 UFO's hanging around!

Deb link
9/22/2014 11:56:24 am

I hear you, Donna. Mine are just mildly arthritic, these scissors feel so much better. My mother suffered from pretty bad arthritis and she loved to knit, beautiful work, but now I have a glimpse of just how much pain she endured to do what she loved. She knit sweaters for all of us over the years.

I have found that Thera Gloves with partial fingers help-but then as I said, mine is pretty mild, there are just days...

Doreen B
9/22/2014 12:58:23 am

I love both piecing and appliqué. I have way to many UFO's to count.
Thanks for the chance to win. Great giveaway.

Deb link
9/22/2014 11:58:23 am

Thanks for stopping by and happy quilting!

Shelly Sandy
9/22/2014 06:48:50 am

I piece and applique, mostly by machine. As far as UFOs, I would estimate 10.

Deb link
9/22/2014 12:01:26 pm

You are in good company, Shelly. Glad you stopped by!

vicki kilen
9/23/2014 12:39:46 pm

I enjoy both piecing and applique. I have 15 UFO ' S to finish. In fact my granddaughter told me I couldn't start any new projects until I finished the ones I've started.

Deb link
9/23/2014 11:33:56 pm

Vicki, I told myself the same thing last month-no new projects until I finish some of the UFO's I love.

Happy UFO busting!!

Diane Byatt
9/24/2014 02:49:09 am

many, many many UFO,s At least now I have a list. LOL

Deb link
9/24/2014 04:48:13 am

Haha, here is to our lists, Diane! Hopefully you will find some encouragement here to pick one and finish it-one you totally love. Happy Quilting!!
