We Can Build a Snowman: Block 5

9/30/2018

Let me introduce you to Block 5-our block for October.  There is a lot of love to go around in this block and once again I have taken a phrase from the song Winter Wonderland for the name of this block: Here to Stay.  These snowman will not melt, but are Here to Stay and have certainly captured our hearts!

When I played with my fabrics on this block I couldn't help but see bowties-I am a Dr Who fan after all and bowties are cool!  I have broken this block down into three units and walk you through how to make each one.  Yes there are some pretty small Flying Geese involved in the making the hearts, but with the No-waste method they go together really easily.  That really is the trickiest part of this block.  There is also a new video tutorial available to show you how I make the center Square-in-a-Square block. Click Here.

I chose this one for October because I love this time of year-the trees have begun to change.  In fact we took a little drive yesterday and the Aspens are showing some gorgeous color, but wouldn't you know I left my camera at home.  This is a glimpse of last years color, and I think they are even more stunning this year so another trip into the woods is planned... with my camera in tow this next time.  So what better way to welcome October but with hearts.

Perhaps it is all of the Christmas fabrics in the shops right now, but I decided to break out of my blue mold and pull some fabrics from my stash to make this second version of my block.
I wanted to show the block with and without the snowman embroidery.  (The buttons will not be added to the block until after the quilt is all put together and quilted).

One of the quilters in my Facebook Sew Along group posted a photo of the blocks she has done so far.  She has not added the snowmen to her blocks and I think they are just lovely.  She gave me permission to share with you.  She did mention that she thinks she will use her embroidery machine to add some snowmen later and that will be fun to see too.  Here are Mary Allred's blocks-either way you choose to do them your quilt will be a beauty in the end!

This is really innovative creativity. I love the fact that I’ve never seen something beautiful before.

Thanks!
