Passing the Days: Day 5

Today I chose Friendship Block for my quilting journey.  It is hard to be away from the ones who love and support us through thick and thin. 

​I walked past this house yesterday and thought about how many chairs are sitting empty.  On porches, in churches today, in our living rooms, classrooms.  It is hard, but we are learning to connect in other ways, and some of those ways have led to deeper sharing in our relationships.  So despite all of the empty chairs, I am thinking about the many friendships I have formed over the years, how special and unique each one is.  So today's block is a shoutout to all of my friends-and that includes you my quilting friends!

The Empty Bench-Debra Davis 2020

Like all of the blocks I am making for this project this one finishes at 6".

Here is what you will need:
Dark Fabric:
     (cut 1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
     (cut 2) 3" x 3"
Light Fabric:
     (cut 4) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2"
     (cut 2) 3" x 3"

Start by drawing a diagonal line on the back of the 3" Light fabric squares.  Place them right sides together on top of the 3" Dark fabric squares and sew 1/4" from each side of the drawn line.

Cut apart on the drawn line and press towards the Light side.  I would usually press towards the darker side, but in this case it works best to press away from those triangles.  Trim these Half-square Triangles  to 2 1/2" x 2 1/2".

Layout the Half-square Triangles with the 2 1/2" squares as shown.  Join together into rows using a 1/4" seam allowance.  Press towards the squares.

Now join these rows together to complete the block.  Press towards the top and bottom rows.

Don't you love how we once again have combined four Half-square Triangles and  five simple squares to come up with another completely unique design.
