I am thankful that we are allowed to go outside for walks. Life is happening all around us and right now the spring bulbs are adding their very special color to our neighborhood. Somedays I have had to force myself to get outdoors, but once I start walking it just feels so good to be out. We live on quite a hill so part of my issue is do we start out huffing and puffing up the hill, or do we end our walk that way. Today we did both, so we noticed these walks are making a difference in our stamina, lol. I am still catching you all up on my blocks from my days of not posting. These blocks are going together pretty quickly which is actually pretty therapeutic in itself. I can enjoy the process and get a finished product in about 30 minutes. Actually takes me longer to settle on my fabric some days than it does to sew them together. So for Day 9 I chose "Box." I am not sure why this block has that name, but it seemed fitting as I think a lot of us are feeling boxed in these days. I knew I had a fabric with box shapes on it in my scraps so my color was decided. For this block you will need to cut the following: Medium Fabric: (cut 4) 3" x 3" (cut 1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Light Fabric: (cut 4) 3" x 3" To press the Half-square Triangels (HST's) this time notice that I have shown arrows on two of them where I pressed them towards the light fabric. The rest were all pressed to the dark side. I did those because it is much easier to get sharp points when joining those particular HST's together if the diagonal seams are pressed in opposite directions. It just meant I had to be careful when I laid the pieces out to make sure I had those two HST's in the right places. Day 10 is a block called Formal Garden. You get to practice everything from the Day 9 block and see how different a block will look when you make a few changes. For my block I went with the garden idea and decided I wanted to use four different dark fabrics for a colorful garden.. I so I started with a Magenta and looked at both sides of the colorwheel and chose a fuchsia and purple from one side and a blue-red from the other. At first I was going to go with a white-on-white for the background but then as I looked at the pieces I had cut out I decided that since this was a garden it needed to be a green background. Looking across my colorwheel that was the perfect choice for a Split-Complimentary color scheme. So I found one of my lightest values of green and when I held it up against the others colors it was a keeper. Cutting Instructions: Dark Fabric: (cut 4) 3" x 3" (Note: cut one of each color if using four fabrics) Light Fabric: (cut 4) 3" x 3" (1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Using the same pressing as the Box block this one gets laid out the same way. And finally for today I will share Day 11: Sawtooth 1 For this block I went back to a two-color scheme: white and orange. I chose orange because it has not made an appearance yet and this is going to be my scrappiest quilt to date so I am using all the colors that make me happy. Cutting Instructions: Medium Fabric: (cut 3) 3" x 3" (cut 2) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" Light Fabric: (cut 3) 3" x 3" (cut 1) 2 1/2" x 2 1/2" After making the Half-square Triangles lay all of your squares out to make the block. No special instructions on this one beyond watching the directions of those HST's when you lay them out and when you sew them together. Wishing you a very blessed day!
