What is your earliest sewing memory? That has been a fun trip down memory lane for me to think about, especially this time of year when my thoughts tend to turn to my youth and family members who are no longer here to share the days with me. I come from a family of women who sewed... and knitted and crocheted. My earliest sewing memory is actually not of really sewing at all but of sitting at my maternal grandmother's treadle sewing machine and just enjoying being able to pretend I was sewing as I worked to rock that treadle back and forth. Then I started to sew for my dolls, by hand. If they needed a new gown for the ball, I put something together from fabric scraps my mom let me have. No pattern and no experience meant that I just played and figured out how to end up with a dress that looked a little bit like what I imagined. I remember how excited I was when our Home Ec. teacher started to teach us how to use the classroom full of singer sewing machines. We all made a simple apron for our project. I did not stop there but found one of the latest fashions out of McCalls pattern book from the early 70's to work on with my mom. That was my favorite part, sitting with my mom working out all of the details. She was very patient with me when I just wanted to hurry up and get it done. Patience is something I eventually learned from her. And I proudly wore my dress to school after it was finished. My paternal grandmother was an amazing seamtress and a quilter too. We only saw them once a year but I slept under the lovely quilts she made. I still have them; treasured keepsakes of days gone by. I like to think that I am carrying on the special legacy of the women who had so much influence on my early life. I like to think that as I continue to grow and learn and to teach others to quilt that that legacy will be carried on far beyond me. My home ec classes were actually in elementary school. Girls had home ec, boys had shop. The when I was in 7th and 8th we became "hip" and switched places for one month each year. Shop was cool, we made jewelry out of spoons and learned some fun plastic techniques, again to make jewelry. I think we had more fun than the boys. Comments are closed.
