I have had so much fun looking for pincushion patterns to share with you. This is just a small sampling so I think there will be another post in my future. These would sure make cute gifts for the sewer on your list.

This is another classic block, and one of my favorites. I had fun going through by bins of fabric scraps pulling out the bright colors for this block. L is for...Log Cabin. I had always heard that this block originated with the pioneers, and that the center block was usually red to represent the warmth of the hearth. It became very popoular in the 1860's so is often associated with Abraham Lincoln and the Civil War.
A little digging and I discovered that this quilt has much older origins. This pattern was found in an Enlgish quilt predating 1820 and...hold onto your hats...similar designs have been found on ancient Egyptian mummies. Part of my love for it is the many ways it can be set in a quilt providing lots of variation in the finished look. Connecting Threads has a nice little page that I borrowed these images from. After the H block this one looks pretty straightforward. Pieces are all cut and laid out on my design board. Those little red blocks remind me of ladybugs. You may be able to guess by now what this block is going to be. I is for...Irish Chain. According to Barbara Brackman's history of this quilt block it seems to have originated in the United States in the early 1800's, so why it is called Irish Chain remains a mystery. The H and I unit is all done! 'Twas a good day in the studio.
I hope you were able to take some time to quilt today too. Until next time, Happy Quilting! |
